What are your thoughts? I'm referring specifically to this 2012 Sonic with 142,000 miles that popped up at a dealer in town. Only $7,400 though! How bad of an idea would that be?
Edit: This is one of the few times I've seen Oppo say something is a bad idea!

How do you get that many miles in such a short span of time? Almost would have to be highway miles for near all of that.
Honestly the price seems a little high considering what they start at.
Can't imagine it would be a bad buy for the right price though. Cars last a lot longer than they used to with less upkeep.

Is the Manufacturer warranty mile or year based?
It's likely had the snot driven out of it. For $7,000 you can pick up a 5 year old econobox with far fewer miles and probably require less repairs.
If you're getting a cheap econobox (yes, 2012 or not, the base sonic is an econobox, nothing more) with 142,000 miles, you shouldn't be paying more than $3000. Consider that you can get a sedan with half that many miles that's just 7 or 8 years old and probably just as terrible to drive.

Yeah, I'm thinking if I were to walk in with $5,000 cash, they'd be hard pressed to turn it down.

My thoughts:
Unproven car, very high miles and still ~50% of new price. I'd pass.
It is probably OK... But I just wouldn't be comfortable with a more or less first year all new car from GM with that high of miles and few other examples out there to gauge reliability with that many miles on it.

I think that's a good idea but what's the purpose of the car? There are plenty of other econoboxes you can get for even cheaper and possibly less miles.

Well I have an 11 year old V70R with 280,000 miles. A 2 year old Sonic with 140k miles isn't worth 7k especially with an auto transmission. Gonna need a flush or a rebuild perhaps.

great car, shitty price. Lower the price to 4k

And realistically, I don't have any need for an econobox. I don't have much of a commute and there's so much more I could do with $7000 (or even $5000) that would be much more interesting long term.

Yeah, unless they'd cut me a better deal, I'd be spending my $7k elsewhere. I don't even need a new car - why am I doing this? D:

Holy Fuck!!! how does someone rack up that many miles that quick? lets do the math using simple numbers. 142000 miles / 2 years = 71000 miles per year. 71000 miles / 365 days = 194 miles a day for every day they owned it. that's crazy!!!

Just sold our truck, ironically! Me and my lady have our eyes set (long term) on a 4-door Wrangler. Mmmmmm..

Regular oil changes? All the services? Someone could have a big commute. But it's overpriced.

it's probably worst than a 10 year old car with the same mileage. it had no chance to rest. and odds are they didn't do an oil change every 5000 miles cause they'd be doing an oil change every month.

Yeah, it really just depends on if it was a fleet car of some kind where they actually strictly followed maintenance timelines.

My guess is that they traded it in because it started to become unreliable. It makes no sense to me why someone would drive a car that much over 2 years, and then trade it in taking the massive depreciation hit. If it were reliable, why wouldn't they just keep on driving it?

It was purchased in October 2011, so it was doing roughly 41k a year. That's a lot of driving, but not a helluva lot of driving.
It's also been in two accidents. At 5k, I'd think it's a good deal. At 7k+, that's stupid.
For $500 more, you can get one with a stick and 62k at a dealer that's pretty much in my backyard...

Would you be fine buying it? Probably.
Could you get a lot more car value/feature/mileage-wise for $7,400 if you're patient and willing to negotiate? Absolutely.

I'd much rather take that one! I prefer that color, the sedan looks better in this case, and it's a stick (with half the mileage)!
